It's Winter Solstice again (21 December) and I'm sure many families are putting the pandemic aside, at least for one day, to reunite and sit down over a bowl of "tangyuan". And why not? The future looks bleak and as an old Chinese proverb goes "Lost time cannot be found again", so enjoy for now!
The ancient Chinese have long regarded this day as an auspicious day and Winter Solstice has a history of over 2,500 years in China. Back in the old days, Mum used to tell me that this day is considered everyone's birthday and that the whole world has grown one year older after this point. So that makes everyone one year older today, like it or not!
Winter Solstice is a time for family reunion, to pray to our ancestors and to eat some traditional food. So let's do our part and enjoy our "tangyuan"!
