Mdm. Wee's 90th Birthday Dinner

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MDM. WEE!

We were delighted to attend Mdm. Wee's 90th birthday dinner last Tuesday night at a vegetarian restaurant in Madras Lane. Mdm. Wee is my mum's old friend and former classmate. She is a small, sprightly woman and despite her age, is still active and mentally sharp. She is also a member of our spiritual group and is well-liked by everyone. Her children are living overseas but they made it a point to return home for her birthday.

There were about 50 guests at the dinner. We enjoyed a 7-course dinner starting with Four Seasons and ending with the customary birthday mee. This restaurant is well known for its special vegetarian dishes. Their cooks were trained in Taiwan, so I was told. One of its specialties is "mutton" rendang which is served with soft, sweet bread. We were also served (on the house) a special fruit tea which was dark pink in colour and had orange and apple slices floating in it. It was delicious and very refreshing.

After the dinner, Mdm. Wee cut her birthday cake and gave a short speech of thanks to all her guests. Everyone of us had a big "mee koo" to take home, which is another Chinese tradition.

I'm sure it must have been quite an exhausting night for Mdm. Wee. We wish her continued good health and many more happy years ahead!
