The Hungry Ghost Festival comes to an end on September 12. I visited the market recently where a huge effigy of the God of Hades has been installed and before it a large table of offerings. There was a big crowd of worshippers who had come from afar to observe this Festival and it was quite difficult moving around to take photos. Lining the road are colourful giant joss sticks which will be later burnt. I find these joss sticks most fascinating as they have been very artistically done. On the other side of the road is a makeshift theatre where stage operas and other musical performances are provided as entertainment for the departed. Roadside stalls have also been set up selling all kinds of food for those who come to pray.

This stall sells prawn fritters, fried tofu, meat rolls, boiled eggs and fish fritters.
This dessert "Si Koh T'ng" is a sweet mixture of dried longans, jelly, sweet potato, barley, ginkgo and tapioca balls.
It is believed that at midnight on the last day of the Festival, the ghosts return to Hell and the gates are shut after them. May all departed souls rest in peace!
