Another Sweet Ending

Today, 22nd February is "Chap Goh Meh" (the 15th day of the Chinese New Year) and it marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations.  How fast time flies!  In keeping with tradition to end the celebrations on a sweet note, I made an early trip to the market and bought some "pengat" for worship at home.  Not surprisingly, the price of one small plastic container of "pengat" has gone up, at least RM2 more than it cost a couple of years ago! These days the "pengat" recipe seems to have strayed from the original and additional ingredents such as black eyed peas and tapioca flour jelly have been added to make it more colourful.  It has in fact become more like "bubur cha cha".  Being a straight laced nonya, I always prefer my "pengat" to be as authentic as possible, pity they don't make it any more like in the old days.

Five bowls of "pengat" ready for prayer

"Pengat" used to be a great favourite with Mum who at one time prepared it at home while we kids helped to cut the ingredients.  A slow painstaking job as everything had to be the perfect size and shape!  The "pengat" that I bought was quite good, being not too sweet though the cut pieces of sweet potato and yam were of irregular size!  These days nobody cares, so long as it tastes good!

Happy Chap Goh Meh everyone and to those who are throwing oranges tonight, good luck!!
