Time to Go Vegetarian!

The Nine Emperor Gods' Festival {Kew Ong Yeah} began yesterday, 1st October and once again it's time for devotees to go on a strict vegetarian diet.  Though I'm not a devotee, I like vegetarian food and I take this opportunity to sample food from the various outlets and makeshift stalls which can easily be identified by their yellow flags and buntings (yellow is the official colour for this celebration).

I was quite captivated by the huge yellow "mee koo" (rice flour "turtle buns") which were offered at the Phor Tay Temple when I went there for prayers.  These buns are important for prayer as they symbolise longevity and prosperity.

The brown "turtle buns" at the back are coffee flavoured!

The festival ends on 9th October with a grand sendoff of the Gods through a procession leading to the sea on a special emperor's boat accompanied by other colourful floats.
