The Fifteenth Night

All good things must come to an end, and so must our Chinese New Year which ends tonight, the fifteenth night (Chap Goh Meh).  As a sweet conclusion to the festivities, most households will prepare or buy "pengat", the traditional dessert containing sweet potatoes, bananas, yam and sometimes "ti kueh" (kueh bakul) cooked in coconut milk and sugar.  The modern day "pengat" has now become more like "bubur cha cha" with the addition of black eye peas, tapioca jelly and other ingredients.  There's no hard and fast rule, they say, and nowadays anything goes!  So long as you enjoy it!

Our "pengat" ready for the altar
So while the younger generation throng the sea to throw oranges tonight, I shall sit down quietly and enjoy my "pengat"!

HAPPY CHAP GOH MEH!
