Yes, who needs a blender when we have our trusty, reliable mortar of yesteryear! It had been one of Mum's "prize" possessions and carefully stored away for a long time, then out it came when our Indonesian maid had a sudden thirst for "sambal". She gave it a thorough "bath" and dried it.

Our mortar and pestle ready for action |
She then toasted some "belachan" (prawn paste), mixed it with some cili padi and red chillies, added a dash of salt and sugar, and started pounding with the pestle (which was pretty heavy) but she managed. After a few minutes, there it was, a chilly red concoction ready to eat! It looked pretty harmless but when I tasted it, wow! It was really "pedas"! (hot). Even my maid had to down a glass of water after tasting it.
Here are some pics I took (maybe I should have taken a video, forgot my camera can do this).

Pounding in progress |
We have been spicing up our meals lately with sambal - very good for you if you've been feeling sleepy and lethargic!! Incidentally, our mortar is one "gadget" which will never break down or require spare parts!
