No one can deny that Chinese New Year is definitely the most colourful time of the year! It is the year of the Pig, the last animal of the Chinese zodiac and many of us are caught up with the excitement of shopping and decorating our homes. These pictures were taken at a market near my home. I just love the way the bottle gourds have been "dressed up" to look so pretty and dainty! Elsewhere, in the shopping malls, new year decorations adorn every shop, making it difficult for shoppers to resist the temptation to buy and buy!
At the temple nearby, they have already laid out the items for "tek nee" - the tradition of placing offerings on the Gods' altar on new year's eve. Picture shows decorated pomelos, bottle gourds, oranges, pineapples, bananas and "ti kueh" (glutinous rice cakes), all considered "auspicious" items for the new year. This year I have simplified things again for my altar - only oranges, "huat kueh" (pink rice cakes) and "ti kueh".
May everyone be blessed with good health, good luck, peace and happiness in the new lunar year!
GONG XI FA CAI!
