This morning when I went to the market, the abundance of Ti Kuih (glutinuous rice cakes) on sale was yet another reminder that Chinese New Year is not far off!
As Penangites will know, Ti Kuih is essential for the sending off of the Kitchen God. This is observed on the 24th day of the 12th moon (12th February) - just round the corner.
Everyone knows the story by now - that the Kitchen God returns to Heaven just before Chinese New Year to report the activities of every household over the past year to the Jade Emperor, who will either reward or punish a family based on the Kitchen God's report. So sweet offerings such as ti kuih are made as a bribe to ensure that he gives a "good" report!
Ti kuih is not a great favourite with me as it sticks to my teeth but it tastes great when sandwiched between two pieces of sweet potato coated with batter and deep fried to a golden crisp!
