The recent rains have brought forth a burst of lovely, green "daun kaduk" (betel leaf) in my hedge. They brought back memories of the time when Mum used to make a tantalizing Peranakan curry dish called "Perut Ikan" (Fish Stomach Curry). True, its name doesn't sound very appetising but it is a delicious concoction of fish stomach and a variety of vegetables and herbs, "daun kaduk" being one of the important ingredients. It is a tedious, time consuming dish to make but the end result is worth the effort.
Nowadays this dish is available in Nonya restaurants but most people will tell you that it doesn't taste as authentic as what their mothers and
grandmothers used to make!
