First time I got stuck in a flood...!! We were in Farlim for a prayer session during which it rained cats and dogs. When we finished the prayers, it was still raining heavily. Obviously we could not go home, so we waited for the rain to abate before moving off. Friends who had gone home earlier rang and warned us that the surrounding area was fast becoming flooded and that we should try to get out as soon as possible.
When we finally pushed off, the greater section of Jalan Thean Teik was already flooded. We didn't know it at that time but a newspaper report the following day said that the nearby river had burst its banks and added to the rising level of water! Somehow I didn't feel too panicky or worried and was in fact quite confident in my little Naza as we drove down that road. Well, it never pays to be over-confident, as I found out. I drove right into a huge mass of water that had covered the road. My mother screamed, my engine stalled and we were stuck! My mother continued to wail that I had driven into the sea and that we were going to drown!
As we sat there praying and wondering what next to do, the good Lord above sent some people to rescue us. One of them was the driver of a church van (a strange coincidence?) which was also stuck! They waded into the water and began pushing my car until it reached the side of the road, next to the church van in fact. The driver said he yelled to me to stop when he saw my car plunging into the water but unfortunately I did not hear him. Anyway, I thanked him profusely and we waited for nearly an hour before we could re-start the engine.
Meantime I had rung a couple of friends who live in the area for help and they arrived after struggling through the traffic that had piled up. One of them led me out of the area via an alternative route and it was well past midnight when we arrived home.
Fortunately my little Naza emerged unscathed after its ordeal. I was told that water had entered a friend's car after she had gone through the same experience and she was up until 3 a.m. with a bucket scooping out the water!
The good Lord does take care of me and my mum.
