Longevity for All

These "longevity peaches" (left) or "siew toh" (in Hokkien) were offerings made to Goddess Guanyin on her 2nd birthday of the year (Friday, 22nd July known as the "Day of Enlightenment).

These little buns in the shape of a peach have lotus seed or nutty filling and are representations of the peaches of immortality. According to Chinese legend, these peaches ripen every thousands of years and grant immortality to humans when consumed!  Another significant offering is the pink steamed rice flour cakes (right) known as "huat kueh" which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Longevity peached are typically served on birthdays to grant long life to the person celebrating his or her birthday. Because of its good significance, the peach is also a common decoration on cakes and pastries.

Happy long life everyone!
