Winter Solstice

The winter solstice has arrived again (22nd December) and this year, we're going "natural" with our Tang Yuan (glutinous rice flour balls cooked in syrup) bought from a vegetarian shop.  As you can see, the colours are very pale and placid but then they're much healthier!  The pink comes from dragon fruit, the green from pandan, the yellow from carrot and the blue from blue peaflower!  I got this information from the assistant at the shop who I must say was most patient in explaining to me!  However, if Mum were around today, she would have frowned with disapproval at the pale colours, she would have insisted on the traditional bright red, yellow and green artificial colouring!    This is the last Chinese festival of the year, by the way and is also the time for family get togethers.  The festival also marks the end of another year and the gaining of one more year in age...!

Happy Winter Solstice everyone!
