The traditional "Huat Kueh" or steamed rice flour cake symbolizes good luck and prosperity, hence it is popularly used as an offering to deities and also for birthdays and wedding parties. According to tradition, the kueh is only successful if it splits in the centre after steaming. It is also believed that when making this kueh, one has to be happy and cheerful otherwise the kueh will not "huat" (rise)!
