Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice is here again and this year it falls on December 21.  This is probably one of the most important festivals celebrated by the locals and traditionally it is the time for the family to get together.  The glutinous rice balls ("Kueh Ee" or "Tang Yuan" ) which are eaten at this time symbolise reunion.  Mum used to roll these balls in her younger days and we kids would also have fun helping in the rolling.  She was very particular and the balls had to be roughly the same size, the white ones being larger than the coloured ones.  Things are now made easier for the present generation who simply buy them from the market and other food outlets.  This festive food is also a reminder that we are one year older!

Happy Winter Solstice Festival!
