A Sad Day

I never thought I would be writing an eulogy for a cat.  Our favourite cat, Smokey went missing today.  Early this morning we heard dogs barking at our gate.  My maid heard the commotion and went downstairs to shoo them away; at the same time she could hear our cats mewing away in fear.  As it was still quite dark, there was little else she could do and went back to bed.

This morning, we found only two of our three cats at home and they were all dirty and messy.  My guess is that one of the dogs had squeezed through our gate and chased them.  These two had managed to find their way home but not Smokey.  We went in search for her with a bag of her favourite Friskies and found, to our horror, her body lying outside a neighbour's house, not far from us.  There was a deep wound on her body, definitely a dog's bite, and black ants were already crawling over it. My maid was heartbroken but there was really nothing we could do.

Smokey was a nice, quiet cat, despite being constantly bullied by Kiki.  She was half Siamese and had the most beautiful blue eyes.  In fact we constantly worried about her and whether she would be kidnapped one day and sold for the money!  We took precautions like keeping her indoors at night but she wasn't really happy inside the house and couldn't wait to be let out.  Unfortunately she was also rather timid and not very streetwise, so could not escape from the dogs.

It doesn't seem befitting for a lovely creature like her to have met such a tragic end but then, that's how it is with cats.  They either go missing, get knocked down or be bitten by a dog.

I hope Smokey has gone to Cat Heaven and that she'll never be reborn again, at least not as a cat, but as a beautiful Siamese princess with everything she wished for!

We're going to miss you, Smokey!
